    Mosquito Biology<\/h2>\nThe male has more densely hairy antennae than the female. Mosquitoes feed mainly on nectar or pollen, but females also need blood to mature their eggs. After a blood meal, the female usually lays her eggs on the surface of the water. The larvae hatch from the eggs, which are aquatic and feed on organic debris or even other insects. They have special respiratory systems that allow them to breathe both in and out of the water. They then pass into the pupa stage, from which the adult insect eventually emerges. Mosquitoes are stimulated by movement, body temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide and are most active in the early morning\/night hours. The female pierces the skin with special \u2019pins\u201c and sucks blood through her proboscis, leaving an itchy saliva. They prefer dark skin.\n

    Mosquito Types in Greece<\/h2>\n

    Useless \u2013 Anopheles sp.<\/em><\/h3>\nIt is the vector that transmits malaria, encephalitis and filariasis. Adults have a body length of about 5 mm and are recognized by their characteristic straight posture, with the proboscis, head and the rest of the body in the same line. Their wings also bear small marks. When a female Anopheles bites a person with malaria, along with the blood it sucks the agent of the disease, the plasmodium. Inside the insect's body, this microbe develops and is transferred to the salivary glands, so that it can be transmitted through a new bite to a healthy person. Anopheles has a lifespan of about 18 days to 4\u20135 weeks.\n

    Common mosquito \u2013 Culex sp.<\/em><\/h3>\nCulex breeds in stagnant and polluted water, as well as in areas with high humidity. It has a characteristic broken proboscis that forms an angle with the rest of the body downwards. Its wings are uniformly colored. The female lays her eggs in groups of 100 or more on the surface of the water, where they float. It has a lifespan of 10\u201315 days, although it can live longer in cold conditions. It is a vector of encephalitis, while in tropical areas it can also transmit filariasis.\n

    Genus Aedes sp.<\/em><\/h3>\nThe genus Aedes transmits yellow fever as well as other serious diseases. It is distinguished from common species by the silver color of its thorax. The larvae of Aedes are short and stout, while its eggs have the ability to survive out of water for a considerable period of time. It reproduces after floods, in rainwater tanks or in salt marshes. Its lifespan is usually 10\u201315 days, although in cold climates it can live for several months.\n

    Tiger Mosquito \u2013 Aedes albopictus<\/em><\/h3>\nThe Aedes albopictus<\/strong> is perhaps the most discussed species internationally in the last two decades. It attacks humans mainly during the day, with increased activity during twilight hours. Females prefer to bite in the ankle and knee areas and in addition to humans, they easily bite other mammals and birds. In Greece, it was first found in 2003 in Corfu and Thesprotia, while in 2008 it was detected in Astakos, Aitoloakarnania. Since then, it has spread widely, including Attica<\/strong>. It has been shown to be a vector of many pathogens: Chikungunya, Japanese Encephalitis, West Nile, yellow fever viruses, as well as nematodes that cause filariasis. The main mode of spread is passive transport, e.g. through the trade of used tires.\n

    West Nile Virus<\/h3>\nThe majority of people infected with West Nile virus remain asymptomatic. About 20% experience mild flu-like symptoms. Fewer than 1% experience more serious manifestations involving the Central Nervous System, such as encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis. The most severe cases usually occur in older people and in patients with suppressed immune systems.     How to Control Mosquitoes \u2013 Professional Methods<\/h2>\nThe effective mosquito control<\/strong> requires a combination of methods at different stages of the insect's biological cycle.     Step 3 \u2013 Insecticides for Mosquito Control<\/h3>\nFor the adult insects that are already circulating, we carry out targeted sprays with pyrethrins<\/strong> on all resting surfaces: vegetation, fences, exterior walls, trees and shady areas. We do not apply open-air residual sprays that break down quickly in the sun and rain \u2014 instead we focus on direct, high-concentration applications to high-traffic areas.     Step 4 \u2013 Trapping and Continuous Monitoring<\/h3>\nEven after the operation, insects from neighboring areas can enter the space. For this reason, we install special CO2 traps<\/strong> that emit carbon dioxide and use specific lighting to attract and capture adults. These traps work complementary to the other methods and at the same time provide population density data for the evaluation of the intervention.     Sandflies \u2013 Gnats (Phlebotomus sp.<\/em>)<\/h2>\nThey belong to the family Psychodidae and there are 700 species. The genera Sandfly<\/em>, Lutzomyia<\/em> and Sergentomyia<\/em> they suck blood from vertebrates and are proven carriers of leishmaniasis<\/strong>. They are small insects up to 5 mm long, slender with long legs and a hairy body. When resting, they place their wings at an angle above their abdomen, forming a V. Females bite mainly at dusk and at night. Their dispersal radius can reach several hundred meters. They overwinter in the 4th generation larval stage. Their life cycle lasts 20\u201340 days.\n

    Leishmaniasis \u2013 Danger for dogs and humans<\/h3>\nLeishmaniasis (Kala azar) is one of the most common infectious diseases of dogs in Greece. It is caused by the parasite Leishmania infantum<\/em>, transmitted by female mosquitoes. It usually affects adult dogs over 6 months of age, regardless of gender or breed. The disease has also been reported in other animals, as well as in humans. Symptoms in dogs include fever, hair loss around the eyes, weight loss, skin ulcers, anemia, arthritis, and kidney failure that can lead to death.\n\nTreatment:<\/strong> It focuses on controlling pests through residual surface spraying, installing screens on doors and windows, using mosquito nets, fans, and indoor insect repellents.\n

    Horseflies \u2013 Tabanidae (Horseflies)<\/h2>\nHorseflies or davanes belong to the Order Diptera and the family Tabanidae. They are cosmopolitan insects with many genera and 4,000 species worldwide.\n\nDescription:<\/strong> They are medium to large in size (6\u201330 mm), with species of the genus Horsetail<\/em> to be the largest and strongest, with a wingspan of up to 6.5 cm. Their coloration varies, often with stripes.\n\nBiology:<\/strong> Females seek blood to lay their eggs (100\u20131,000 eggs) by sucking blood from humans, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and birds. The eggs are coated with a hydrophobic substance and the larvae fall into the mud.\n\nRelationship with man:<\/strong> Their bite is very painful for humans and animals. They are mechanical vectors of animal diseases such as anthrax, anaplasmosis and tularemia, while in humans they transmit the nematode Loa loa<\/em>.\n\nTreatment:<\/strong> Their control is difficult. Drainage of marshy areas, colored attractant traps, and geraniol-based collars for humans and animals are recommended. Controlling the larvae is particularly difficult as many species live below the soil surface.\n
